Заинтересованность в китах была частью меня так долго, как я себя помню. Когда я был ребенком, дедушка пел мне песню, которая начиналась так:

«В Северном море жил кит…

С большими костями и огромным хвостом…»

В песне пелось о том, как кит был хозяином своей местности до того дня, пока он не встретил незнакомца в своих владениях: большую сверкающую серебряную рыбину, которая упорно отказывалась признавать мастерство кита. Кит рассердился и шлепнул незваного гостя своим хвостом. Это было фатальной ошибкой, потому что незнакомец оказался торпедой…

Всякий раз, когда мне под руку попадалось что-то о китах, я запоем это читал; но единственной вещью, в которой убеждало меня мною прочитанное, было то, что киты обречены человеческой жадностью на исчезновение и на то, чтобы унести в забвение свои тайны.
