In all countries, the volunteer movement has deep roots. For example, in Russia the history of the volunteer movement was initially associated with the activities of the Orthodox Church, later with the initiative of the first non-profit public associations — zemstvos, teachers and doctors, who did a lot for the Russian peasantry. In Russia, the first women’s volunteer movement arose, the sisters of mercy who voluntarily went to the front during the Russo-Turkish war to help the wounded soldiers.
