Млекопитающие приспособились к жизни в наземно-воздушной, почвенной и водной средах жизни, есть летающие звери. В различных природно-климатических зонах млекопитающие населяют леса, луга, степи, пустыни, горы. Обитают по берегам водоемов, в реках, озерах, морях и океанах. По образу жизни млекопитающих объединяют в несколько экологических групп. Звери одной экологической группы обладают характерными особенностями строения, жизнедеятельности, поведения (рис. 218). (Объяснение названия «экологическая группа» см. в § 49, в очерке об экологических группах птиц.)
Типично наземные млекопитающие населяют леса и открытые пространства. У них пропорционально сложенное сильное тело, хорошо развитые высокие конечности, мускулистая шея. Передвигаются они ходьбой, бегом и прыганьем. Наиболее ярко признаки группы проявляются у быстро бегающих зверей.
Среди наземных зверей много растительноядных видов — это олени, лошади, антилопы, козлы, бараны и др. Особые приспособления имеют млекопитающие, которые кормятся ветками и листьями деревьев. Так, у жирафа хорошо развита шея. Это позволяет ему срывать листья, недоступные для других наземных животных, хорошо видеть и вовремя обнаруживать врагов. У слонов мощное компактное тело, массивная голова и короткая шея компенсируются длинным подвижным хоботом.
