Крымская война столкнула на своих сражениях несколько самых крупных европейских держав. Это была схватка между Россией, Англией, Османской империей, Францией и Сардинией.
Каждое из государств имело свои цели и соображения по поводу получения выгоды от участия в войне. Россия, в первую очередь, была заинтересована в открытом доступе к черноморским проливам, что могло открыть дополнительные перспективы для торговли и внешнеполитических отношений.

Русские дипломаты вели напряженную работу по обеспечению борьбы за максимально комфортные условия для решения данного конфликта.
Итогом проделанной работы стало подписание договора с Турцией. Этот Ункиар-Искелессийский договор гласил о том, что Россия получает право на свободное перемещение своих военных кораблей через воды пролива. Но спустя десятилетие ситуация изменилась, и, после впуска ряда соглашений, на их основе проливы с получили закрытый статус для всех военных флотов.
Российский флот оказался в крайне некомфортных условиях после принятия такого международного решения. Фактически он был заперт в акватории Черного моря. В связи с этим Россия приняла решение применить всю свою военную мощь и занять прочные позиции на Балканах и Ближневосточных территориях.
